As a sort of a continuing of these two threads (I know now that nor my RAM drive, nor IrfanView are the cause), I am asking you: what might be the reason for such spontaneous restarts after almost two years of using this same totaly stable installation of Windows XP/Pro SP2??!
A dying hard-disk (though by my “feeling” it doesn’t seem to be the culprit/doesn’t seem to have problems), a dying PSU, or maybe even a dying motherboard or some part/component of it???!!!
I must also stress that in case of these restarts there’s no BSOD, CHKDSK is not scheduled after they occur, there is no entry in the Event Viewer etc. And they occur even if I do nothing special (nothing stressful for a computer), i.e. they can occur when I am browsing the Internet and am just in the middle of reading something (i.e.I am not clicking or doing a heavy multitasking etc.)!!
If I would need to speculate, I would say that there might be a bad sector that is accessed (attempted to be read from/written to) only very rarely, and when it is the restart occurs. Therefore I will probaly scan the hard-disk also with manufacturer’s diagnose/repair utility”.
P.S. – I would gladly say that this occurs only when connected to the Internet., but unfortunately I can’t say it since 1 out of 8 or 9 such reboots didn’t occur when connected, but right afer the desktop was loaded (oddly enough, meaning that it have never happen before in such a way) after the reboot; obviously 9 of them did occur when I was connected to the Internet.
/edited: fixed the link of one of the two linked threads
Hey all, I hope that this is the right section of Ars OpenForum…
Yesterday when I shut-down my computer because of the storm/lightning, I “took the advantage” of this situation (as I already did not so long ago, and managed to reduce the temperature of the CPU for 10 C; btw. I blogged about it here and here on my slovenian blog), and cleaned the CPU and case fans (like I did it before), but this time also PSU and graphic-card (a nVidia GeForce4 MX 440 graphic processor, ASUS V8170 DDR video adapter, with 64 MB of “internal memory”) fans, and so I noticed one very strange thing.
You see, it’s that compare to CPU/case fans that are spinning even if I only blow into them, the PSU and graphic-card fans spin very hardly (i.e. I tried to move them with a pencil, and they almost seemed to be stucked/barely rotating), so I basically wanted to open this thread and ask if this is normal.
But now listen to this: after I booted the computer this morning I checked the PSU fan (I haven’t checked graphic-card’s one though since it’s positioned in such a way that it’s PITA to check it when computer is running), and it certainly ISN’T spinning at all. Now I wonder for how long it is like this, and above all, how that the PSU is still working normally (i.e. is not over-heating)?? Is there anything that I could do (before byung a new one; of course, only if it’s necessary) to try to make it work/rotate normally again??!
P.S. – Oh and also one other dust/temp related question: is there anything that I can try (like a simple well-known trick) to reduce the amount of dust that gets into the PC’s case??! For instance I thought of something like maybe putting a wet napkins in the front area of the case (since the case fan is at the back of the case and it’s blowing the air out) etc.??! Because my PC certainly is in a very, very dusty room.
Thanks in advance, shirker
